To prevent the rug from slipping out of place on a ceramic floor, select one with a non-slip backing. This is especially important for smaller rugs in high-traffic areas where slipping on such a rug is more likely. If the rug does not have a backing, you can place a non-slip pad or carpet tape underneath.
Choose a color that complements the tile floor well. The two could contrast one another, such as a red rug on a white tile floor. They also could blend together a bit, such as a pale yellow rug on an off-white tile floor. If your room is small, select a light color to help it feel larger. If the room is large, a darker-colored rug helps make the room feel more cozy. If the tile grout is a different color than the tiles, choose a rug in the same color as the grout or a rug with the some of the same color in it.
Since a tile floor typically has a checkerboard pattern, you may not want to select a rug with a pattern on it. However, if the rug pattern is vastly different, such as with colorful circles on it, or if the pattern is small and more discreet, that could complement a tile floor very well. If the rug covers up most of the floor, the pattern does not matter as much.
If you like that your ceramic tile floor is easy to clean, you may not want to cover it with a rug that requires professional cleaning. A machine-washable rug or one that you can run a carpet cleaner over may be preferred. Also, a tiled living room or bedroom can often give off a tropical feel. Play off the floor and choose a rug with pictures of tropical flowers or seashells on it. You can then add other tropical elements in the room, such as wicker furniture and potted palms.
