How to Make a Scatter Rug

Add a touch of homey coziness to bare floors with colorful scatter rugs. Made from basic cotton fabric, braided scatter rugs can be as large or small as you need to cover your floor area. If you reuse fabric scraps from old clothes or sheets, making scatter rugs can cost very little money. Choose fabrics in colors that match your room decor and make a 3-foot-wide scatter rug for your floor.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Cut all of the fabric into 1 1/2-inch strips. For best results, lay the fabric flat with the selvages (the uncut edges with printing) at the top and bottom. Measure the strips and cut them with the scissors or with a rotary cutter.

    • 2

Divide the strips into three equal groups. Sew the strips in each group end-to-end with the sewing machine to make three long strips for braiding.

    • 3

Lay the three strips side by side to prepare to braid them. Cut an 18-inch length of upholstery thread and stitch the strips together at the ends to hold them securely. Tie a knot and clip off the excess thread.

    • 4

Braid the strips together loosely. Do not braid the strips too tightly or your scatter rug may not lay flat after you finish constructing it. Continue braiding until you reach the ends of the strips. Stitch the braided strips together with the needle and thread, tie a knot and clip off the excess thread.

    • 5

Cut another 18-inch length of upholstery thread and thread the needle. Coil the braid to begin making the center of the scatter rug. As you coil the braid, stitch the edges together with the needle and thread to hold the coil securely.

    • 6

Continue coiling the braid and stitching as you coil, placing stitches about every 1/2 inch along the edges of the braid. Tie off the thread and start new thread as necessary. When the rug becomes about 8 to 10 inches in diameter, lay it flat on a table or floor as you coil to ensure that it lies flat as you stitch.

Tuck in the end of the braid when you finish coiling the rug. Stitch a few extra stitches to secure the end of the braid, tie a knot in the thread and cut off the excess thread.
