How to Make a Hand-Woven Shaggy Rug on a Floor Loom

Crafters who end up with a lot of fabric scraps are always looking for new ways to use up the little pieces. A hand-woven shag rug may be the ideal answer to the question. With an easy-to-assemble floor loom, making a woven shag rug is simple enough for an elementary school student. When making a shag rug, use fabrics that require the same cleaning instructions to ensure the rug will still look good wash after wash.

  • 4 pieces 2-by-2 lumber
  • Saw
  • 4 L-brackets
  • Screws

Instructions

    • 1

Decide how large you want the rug to be. Cut the lumber an inch longer than the finished rug dimensions. Use the L-brackets to connect the lumber in the shape of the rug. Lay the frame on the floor. Along the top of frame, place a mark every inch to two inches on all sides of the frame. The thicker the fabric you intend to use, the wider the marks can be. Place a screw at each mark. Leave a quarter to a half-inch of the screw sticking up. The screws should be lined up directly opposite of one another as you look across the frame.

Start at the corner and loosely tie the twine around one screw. Leave a tail on the twine free. String the twine up and around the two screws on the opposite part of the frame. String the twine back down around the two screws on the first frame. Continue until you have a single strand of twine flowing from each screw. Tie off to the last screw and cut twine. Leave a tail. Consider this layer of twine your horizon. Repeat the process across the vertical frame supports.

Knot fabric around the intersecting strings at each point. You will find it easier to start in the middle of the twine grid and work your way out. Try to keep the fabric end even when knotting for a more uniform look. Once the grid is secure at each intersecting point, go back and fill in the rug by knotting fabric on each side of each grid square. Again, work from the middle to the outer edges.

At each corner, untie the loose ends and knot them together. Cover the twine with knotted fabric. One at a time, remove the twine from around the screws, covering the twine with knotted fabric.
