How to Install a Stair Runner Curved Rug

Measure and mark a 2-inch border with a pencil along the side edges and a 1-inch border along the back edge of each stair using a carpenter's square.

Cut a rectangle of 1/4-inch thick foam using shears to cover the interior shape of each stair minus the 2-inch sides. Add on 1-inch to the width of each foam shape.

Place each foam shape onto each stair, positioning them in place, then staple them down using a staple gun and 1/2-inch staples.

Select a stair runner curved rug that will fit along the length of the stair case as well as within the width you marked.

Drape the stair runner rug over the stair, positioning it directly over the foam shapes, so that the curved end is at least 2 feet from the last stair.

Staple along the bottom edge of the last stair to secure the bottom of the stair runner in place.

Push a carpet stretcher upward to keep the carpet taut along the first stair rise, then staple along the underside of the first step using the staple gun.

Push the carpet stretcher over the first step to keep the carpet taut, then staple along the back edge of the first step.

Push the carpet stretcher upward along the second stair rise, then staple along the underside of the second step.

Repeat this process until the all of the stairs have been covered by the stair runner.
