How to Weave a Carpet

Handmade woven carpets make a room look more artistic and homey, but buying a handmade woven from an artisan or specialty store may not fit into your decorating budget. However, you can save money by making your own handmade woven carpet using a few inexpensive materials purchased from any arts and crafts supply store. This enables you to create a beautifully decorated space using colorful woven carpets without spending a fortune.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a sheet of plywood that is 1 inch thick, 36 inches wide and 48 inches long vertically on a flat surface.

    • 2

Hammer 18, 1/2-inch-long nails along the top edge of the plywood, spacing each nail 2 inches apart and hammering them halfway into the plywood. Similarly hammer 18 nails along the bottom edge of the plywood.

    • 3

Cut 18 pieces of wool into strips measuring 2 inches wide and 52 inches long. Tie one end of each strip onto one of the nails along the top of the plywood. Tie the other end of each strip onto the corresponding nail along the bottom of the plywood. Keep the strips taut when you tie them in place.

    • 4

Cut 30 pieces of wool into strips measuring 2 inches wide and 48 inches long. Tie the ends of the wool strips together to create one long strip.

    • 5

Weave the long wool strip back and forth horizontally through the vertically tied strips. Push the strips together to keep the carpet tightly woven.

    • 6

Tie the end of the long wool strip onto one of the vertically tied strips to secure the weaving in place.

    • 7

Cut the vertically tied strips off the nails then tie the end of each strip into a knot to finish the woven carpet.
