Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the rug with the tape measure. Cut a piece of canvas that equals the width of the rug. For example, if the rug is 4 feet wide, cut the canvas the length of 4 feet with a 2.5 inch width.

    • 2

Fold under each edge of the canvas fabric 1/4 inch and press these edges with an iron. Stitch along the folded edges with a sewing machine to hem the raw edges.

    • 3

Lay out the sheet on a flat surface to protect the rug and place the rug onto the sheet with the back side facing up. Position the hemmed canvas sleeve along the upper edge of the rug, about 1 inch below the edge.

    • 4

Thread the tapestry needle with an 18-inch length of cotton thread and tie a knot in the end of the thread. Stitch the canvas sleeve to the rug using small whipstitches along both long edges. Space the stitches about every 1/8 inch along the edges. Try to place the stitches between the threads of the rug instead of piercing the threads with the needle. When the length of thread gets short, tie a knot in the thread and use another length of thread. Tie a knot in the thread when you finish stitching and cut off any excess.

    • 5

Insert the dowel or curtain rod through the sleeve so that about 3 inches of dowel extends from each end of the sleeve.

    • 6

Drive drywall screws with anchors into the wall where you wish to hang the rug. Rest the dowel over the screws to hang the rug.
