How to Keep a Braided Rug From Fraying

A braided rug adds colorful country charm to your room. Whether yours is hand-woven or machine-made, the diverse colors and fabric lend visual interest while protecting your floor surface. With use and wear, braided rugs have a tendency to loosen a bit at the seams. While fraying is a natural trait in braided rugs, you can prevent it through proper maintenance and care. If you clean your braided rug using methods that won't damage the fabric and catch loose pieces early on, you can keep it in tip-top condition.

Instructions

Vacuum your braided rug regularly using a vacuum without metal on the underside and without a power head. Gently remove dirt from the rug by vacuuming both sides.

Remove stains and clean your braided rug without damaging the fibers or fabric colors by using dry cleaning solvent. Wet a clean cloth with the solvent, wringing out excess moisture, and dab at stains and dirty areas. Blot the areas with a clean, dry cloth to lift the dirt and stains.

Keep the seams of your braided rug strong to prevent it from falling apart.

Strengthen any loose braids or seams by sewing them with a whip stitch using heavy-duty thread. Pinch the two pieces of fabric together where you wish to strengthen the seam. Pull the thread through both pieces of fabric until it stops at the knotted end. Wrap the thread over the pinched edges of fabric, and pull the thread through both pieces again, in the same direction. Continue to whip stitch until you've sewn the entire seam that needed strengthening.

Place a drop of fray adhesive on the underside of the end of fabric that's become loose from the rug's weave or has started to fray. Gently tuck the fabric piece into position on the rug and press down to bond the piece to the rug. Allow the adhesive one hour to dry.
