How to Choose a Duvet

Choose the right size duvet for your needs, either selecting a size that perfectly matches your bed, or going up a size for extra snuggle room. A single is generally 3 feet by 6 feet 3 inches while a double measures 4 feet 6 inches by 6 feet 3 inches. For a larger duvet, select a king which measures 5 feet by 6 feet 6 inches or a super king measuring a full 6 feet by 6 feet 6 inches.

Select the tog of your new duvet according to how warm you would like your duvet to be. Regardless of the type of filling and weight, the tog number will accurately rate the overall warmth the duvet offers. The lower the tog number, the cooler the insulation. If you live in a changing climate, you might consider the highest tog, 13.5, which is actually a double duvet with togs of 4.5 and 9 which can be used separately or together for the perfect duvet for every season.

Purchase a classic duvet stuffed with down, the soft lightweight clusters which are found below goose feathers. While down is generally the most expensive type of filling, it is the most lightweight, the most durable and the best insulator.

Save a bit of money if you would like a slightly cooler duvet and choose feather or feather and down combination filling. Feathers are a bit heavier and harder than down, as they have quills, and do not offer the same insulation as down, but are a fine option for those in warmer climates or those on a budget.

Go for a wool duvet for the least expensive option. Wool duvets are far heavier than down or feather duvets, but offer similar warmth. Additionally, wool is fire-resistant and hypoallergenic--two reasons why you might prefer to choose a wool duvet.
