Determine a length and width for your throw pillow. It can be as large or as small as you want it to be. Some of the popular sizes for throw pillows are 12-by-12, 14-by-20, 16-by-16 and 20-by-20.
Cut two pieces of fabric for each throw pillow you desire to make. The measurements for the pieces of fabric should include the size pillow you chose, plus 1 inch for a seam allowance. For example, if you want to make a throw pillow that is 12-by-12, you will cut two pieces of fabric that is 13-by-13. If you want to make a throw pillow that is 14-by-20, cut two pieces of fabric that is 15-by-21.
Use a needle and thread to stitch a 1-inch hem on all four sides of one piece of fabric. If you don't want to use needle and thread, you can use hemming tape. Repeat this step with the other piece of fabric.
Place the two pieces of fabric together so they mirror one another. The patterned sides of the fabric should be facing inwards. The reverse sides of the fabric should be facing outwards.
Use your needle and thread to stitch the edges of the fabric together. The stitching should be done all the way around the fabric on three sides. When you get to the fourth side of the fabric, only stitch part of that side. Leave 4 to 5 inches of the fourth side unstitched.
Take the inverted fabric and turn it on the right side, so the patterned side is now facing outwards and the reverse side is turned inwards.
Use an iron to iron out any wrinkles that may be in your fabric. The iron should be set to a "low" or "delicate" heat setting.
Stuff the batting into the opening that was left on the fourth side of the fabric. Be generous with the stuffing so that your throw pillow will be nice and plush.
Stitch the fabric opening closed. This will secure and conceal the batting/pillow form that is on the inside. When you are finished, all four sides of the fabric should be completely stitched.
