How to Make a Rocking Chair Pad

A rocking chair pad adds comfort to an otherwise hard wooden chair, as well as a touch of flair and decor that will brighten any room. Rocking chair pads are not difficult to make and do not take long to complete. In fact, you can make several and have a home decor accent that can be changed seasonally. Choose complementary colors of fabrics that you enjoy and have fun.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape Scissors Sewing Machine Iron Pins Approximately 2 yards of 100 percent cotton fabric Coordinating piping Coordinating thread Knife-edged foam cushion Ribbon for ties (optional)

Instructions

Decide if you want only a seat cushion, or a seat and back cushion. These instructions are for sewing both a seat and back cushion. With the measuring tape, measure the area of the desired cushion(s). After both the length and width measurements are taken, add 3 inches to each measurement and this is the size to cut the fabric pieces.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of fabric for each cushion dimension. Measure the perimeter of each fabric piece and cut one piece of piping of these measurements for each cushion.

    • 3

Stitch piping approximately 1/2 inch from the edge of one piece of fabric for each cushion. Place right sides together and stitch a seam 1/2 inch from the edges around the cushion covers, leaving one side open for turning. Sew with the piped piece on top and it is best to slightly round the corners of the cushion while sewing the piping on. Sew the two cushion pieces together to fit the shape of the cushion.

Clip any corners of the the fabric off and pull the cushion cover right side out through the hole left open. Press the cover well with hot iron. Carefully insert the foam cushion into the cushion cover. Once the cushion has been inserted and adjusted for fit, carefully close the opening with small slip stitches.

Repeat the same process for the back cushion. If desired, these cushions can also have ties at the edges for attaching the cushions to the rocking chair. These are easily made by pinning ties (made out of the same fabric or even made from ribbon) in two corners of the cushions before stitching the cushion cover together.
