How to Make a Vinyl Leather Banquette Seat

Banquette function like a combination of a traditional window seat and a large bench. Often, banquette seating features storage underneath. According to the Bob Villa website, banquettes are commonly used in kitchen design as an alternative to traditional seating options. Building a banquette into the kitchen space features a large amount of seating for a big family or for those who like to entertain. Adorn the banquette with a thick, stylish cushion to create a comfortable spot for curling up with a hot cup of tea.

Things You'll Need

  • 1¼ yards of extra-loft batting
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing measuring tape
  • High density foam, 17 inches by 23 inches by 5 inches
  • Spray adhesive
  • 1 yard of vinyl fabric, 52 to 54 inches wide
  • 1¼ yards of fleece
  • Sewing machine
  • Upholstery thread, in coordinating color
  • Upholstery sewing needle

Instructions

    • 1

Place the extra loft batting flat on the sewing table. Measure two rectangles 17 by 23 inches. Cut out the rectangles. Attach to the top and bottom of the high density foam using spray adhesive.

    • 2

Place the fleece on the table and cut out two rectangles measuring 19 by 25 inches. Cut two, equal sized rectangles from the vinyl fabric. Measure a rectangle measuring 7 inches by 88 inches from the fleece and the vinyl.

    • 3

Use a sewing machine to sew the fleece pieces to the backsides of the same sized vinyl rectangles. Keep the thread ½ inch away from the edge of the fabrics to create a ½-inch seam allowance.

    • 4

Take one 17-by-23-inch vinyl and fleece rectangle and place it face down on the table to the short side faces the top. Place the 7-by-88-inch rectangle face down on the right side of the rectangle. Sew the two edges together.

    • 5

Bend the 7-by-88-inch rectangle so that it crosses along the bottom of the 17-by-23-inch rectangle. Sew the edges together. Bend the 7 by 88 inch pieces one more time along the left side and sew it to the 17 by 23 in piece.

    • 6

Place the second 17-by-23-inch rectangle on top of the pieces sewn together in Step 5. Sew the edges to the edges of the 7-by-88-inch rectangle, leaving the top open. The final product should resemble a large pocket.

    • 7

Turn the large pocket right side out. Slide the batten covered foam inside of the large pocket. Tuck the raw edges of the open end inside of the pocket. Thread the needle and hand sew the opening closed.
