How to Wrap a Fabric Cushion

Don’t buy new throw cushions for your couches or beds; wrap your current cushions in fabric for an inexpensive update to your décor. Wrap fabric cushions in a no-sew fabric cover that easily pins closed. Craft stores offer a wide selection of tassels, bows, flowers and rosettes that can be used to conceal the single pin in the front center of the cushion. Most fabric cushions can be wrapped using only 1 yard of fabric.

Things You'll Need

  • Square fabric cushion
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric
  • Safety pin, 2 inches long
  • Embellishments (optional)
  • Iron (optional)
  • Ironing board (optional)
  • Glue gun (optional)
  • Glue sticks (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the cushion’s width. Multiply the width measurement by 2 to find the modified width. This is the width of the fabric needed.

    • 2

Measure the cushion’s length. Multiply the length measurement by 2 to find the modified length. This is the length of the fabric needed.

    • 3

Purchase fabric according to the modified width measurement and the modified length measurement.

    • 4

Place the fabric on the table with the wrong side facing up. Turn the cushion on a diagonal (like a diamond), and center it on top of the fabric, which should be positioned like a square. According to website MyLifetime.com, you will wrap the cushion much like you would wrap a gift. Some refer to this wrap style as an "envelope wrap."

    • 5

Grasp the top right corner of the fabric, and bring it over the center of the cushion.

    • 6

Grasp the top left corner of the fabric, and pull it over the center of the cushion. You may have a slight overlap of the folded corner edges of the previously folded corner.

    • 7

Grip the bottom right corner of the fabric, and bring it up and over the center of the fabric cushion.

    • 8

Pull the bottom left corner of the fabric up and over the center of the fabric cushion. The edges of the four folded corners may not align. The folded corners may overlap. Fold any raw edges under. Folded edges may be ironed on top of the cushion (on an ironing board) to “set” the fabric, if desired.

Insert a safety pin through the back of a bow, fabric rosette, tassel, or any other craft embellishment you like. Craft stores offer a wide selection of ready-made products that can be used as embellishments. Replace the pin with glue, if you prefer, by gluing the folded corners to the cushion with a glue gun. A button or bow can be glued to the center to conceal the corners. According to MyLifetime.com, wrapping a cushion takes about five minutes. However, more time can be invested in decorating the cushion.

Insert the same pin though the four points of the folded corners at the cushion’s center, so the embellishment is on the front of the cushion, and the pin is concealed between the embellishment and the fabric wrap front. Close the safety pin. Website "Ginny's," in the article, "Room by Room Makeovers: Tie a Bow Pillow," suggests tying a coordinating or contrasting color ribbon around the pillow in lieu of using a pinned embellishment.
