How to Make Removable Throw Pillow Covers With Velcro Closure

If you are tired of your home decor but you don't have a lot of money for redecorating, consider this project for creating removable throw pillow covers with Velcro closure. These covers can add a splash of new color to any room without a lot of expense on your part. The removable factor means they will be easy to wash, so they can be perfect for homes with young children or pets.

Things You'll Need

  • Throw pillows
  • Fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Fabric chalk or crayon
  • Scissors
  • Velcro strips
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle and thread
  • Fabric glue

Instructions

  1. Spice Up Your Throw Pillows

    • 1

Measure and cut fabric. Your fabric should be one inch longer than your pillow on all sides. Mark measurements with fabric chalk on wrong side (the side of fabric that won't show).

    • 2

Sew fabric edges to prevent fraying. Place fabric with the wrong side up and fold each edge in approximately 1/4 inch, two times (you roll the fabric in 1/4 inch, then do it again, then sew). Do this for all sides of all pieces of fabric.

    • 3

Sew fabric pieces together. Place the pieces together with right sides facing and sew along three sides; you will have an extra flap up and above where you have sewn, and an open pocket.

    • 4

Turn the pocket right-side-out and you will have a pocket with a flap that comes down over the opening.

    • 5

Add Velcro. Glue or sew a length of Velcro to the underside of the flap and to the pillow case itself where the flat meets the rest of the pillow. The pieces should meet when you fold down the flap.

    • 6

Insert your pillow and affix the flap with the Velcro. You can add embellishments by gluing trim around the edges or sewing buttons or appliques onto the front of the pillow, if you wish.
