Choosing Bed Pillows

Because you spend at least eight hours of the day with your head on a pillow, it makes sense to choose one that supports your neck and head and comforts you into remaining asleep. Rising from your bed with a sore back or stiff neck – the result of a pillow that does not conform to your body and needs – can ruin your entire day. Stores have a multitude of sizes, shapes and different fillers to choose from, so make sure you get a pillow that helps you get a restful night's sleep.

Instructions

Choose a pillow that supports the way you sleep. If you sleep on your side or back, you might want a pillow that has strong support for your neck and back, while a stomach sleeper might prefer a softer pillow that does not push his head up. If you prefer two pillows instead of one, you may want flatter pillows. To test a pillow's support, lay it on a hard surface and push down with both hands for 10 seconds. If the pillow springs back, it has a strong support and if it lays flat, it has weak support.

Consider the size of your bed when selecting pillow sizes. Queen size pillows are made for that size bed, as are standard-, full- and king-size pillows. But the right size is a matter of personal taste. Often sheets are sold in sets that include pillowcases; if you buy pillows that are a different size than your bed, you may have to buy additional pillowcases.

Look for pillows with hypoallergenic filling if you are prone to allergies. Down pillows offer cushy pleasure for those who like their heads cradled in comfort, but offer little in neck support. Memory foam pillows contain a condensed structure that provides extra support while forming repeatedly to the contours of your head and neck, but may have a disagreeable odor. Polyester pillows offer a cheaper alternative, yet offer poor support and need to be replaced more frequently

Look at the pillow's stitching and the fabric. A higher-quality pillow will be made of fabric with a high thread count and the stitching will be straight and tight to keep the filler from pushing out.
