Floor cushions are a great addition to any home, because they are decorative and useful. Lounge on one to watch television, or use a few floor cushions as extra seating for guests. They're also ideal for an elegant Japanese or Moroccan style dinner, around a low table. Choose a style that matches your decor, since you'll leave them out when they aren't in use.
Sitting on chairs is not typical in Japanese culture. Instead, people gathered around a low table for dining or tea commonly sit on rectangular shaped cushions called zabutons. Japanese style cushions, designed for comfort, are usually sold as a set. A smaller square or round cushion placed on top of a zabuton is called a zafu. When sitting cross-legged on the zafu, your legs rest comfortably on the zabuton. These cushions are traditionally rayon or silk, while more modern styles use natural fibers like buckwheat hulls.
In Morocco, a pouf is a small, round, floor cushion, usually leather and traditionally used for dining. When sitting on a pouf, your knees are off the ground, since it is significantly higher than a typical floor pillow. Other Moroccan style floor cushions are flat, with rug-inspired designs, and usually handwoven wool or cotton. Indian culture uses floor cushions for yoga and meditation. They are typically small, square and covered in silk or rayon. Bright colors -- such as yellow, orange, red and fuchsia -- with gold embroidery, are common Indian-inspired design elements.
The squared edges of a tufted floor cushion keep it firm and flat, especially if the cushion is a heavy-duty fabric such as canvas. These are the most space-saving type of pillow, since they are stackable. Floor loungers are large tufted cushions. They're usually extra long so that when folded in half, one part leans up against a wall to support your back.
Giant-size floor cushions designed to resemble low chair styles are also available. In plush fabrics such as microsuede or faux velvet, they usually include removable covers. They are available in many styles, and filled with either shredded foam, memory foam, polyester fiber fill or down feathers. The classic bean bag chair is another type of floor cushion. Not just for kids anymore, bean bags come in a large variety of styles, colors and fabrics. High-end bean bags have upgraded from a polystyrene filling, which may flatten over time, to other fillings such as shredded foam. Durable leather coverings are also available for a bean bag.
