How to Make a Pillow With Striped Fabric

Striped pillows can lend a fun yet still sophisticated look to a living room, bedroom or sunroom. Stripes are not feminine, nor are they particularly masculine, so they work well in almost any room in the house. Choose a fabric with bold or subtle stripes that go well with the rest of the room's decor. Make both sides from the same striped fabric, or make one side a coordinating solid color; flip the pillow over when the mood suits.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Polyfill or pillow form

Instructions

    • 1

Cut your striped fabric into two squares, each an inch larger than the desired finished pillow size. For example, if you want your finished pillow 9 inches square, cut two pieces of fabric 10 inches square.

    • 2

Lay the two pieces on top of each other, right sides facing. Be sure the stripes on both pieces of fabric are running in the same direction. Pin the fabric together along all four edges.

    • 3

Sew, using a 1/2 inch seam. Leave an opening at least 4 inches wide along one side. Turn the pillow right side out through the opening.

    • 4

Stuff the pillow using either a pillow form or some type of polyfill. If using stuffing, be sure to get enough inside. The less you use, the lumpier your pillow will be.

    • 5

Fold the open edges of the pillow to the inside and pin closed. Thread a needle with a yard of thread that matches the fabric of the pillow.

    • 6

Use the needle to whip stitch the opening shut. Use small, tight stitches so they are virtually invisible.
