How to Iron Pictures to a Pillowcase

Decorative pillows incorporate the design theme of a bedroom with accentuating patterns. However, pillow covers are often costly, and can be difficult to locate in a specific design. Transferring pictures to a plain pillowcase is a cost-effective technique that lets you personalize to fit your room's style. You can print designs onto transfer paper or purchase designs from the craft store to add subtle detailing or make a bold statement in your home.

Things You'll Need

  • Iron-on inkjet transfer paper
  • Inkjet printer (optional)
  • Cotton pillowcase, in a pale color
  • Clothes iron
  • Scissors

Instructions

    • 1

Upload a photo to your computer or find an image online. Use your photo-editing program to create a mirrored version of the image. This function varies by computer program, but is often found under the rotate function as "flip horizontally." Alternatively, purchase a preprinted image from a local craft store.

    • 2

Print a test image on a regular piece of paper to make sure it is satisfactory. Print the image onto iron-on transfer paper, following the paper manufacturer's instructions. Allow the ink to dry.

    • 3

Wash and dry the pillowcase as normal. Turn the iron to the hottest setting, but with no steam.Trim down the image, leaving a small even border on all sides, between the design and the edge of the paper.

    • 4

Lay the pillowcase on a flat, even surface that is about waist high, such as a counter top, so you can press down with greater force. Do not use an ironing board or other heat-sensitive surface, which can damage the transfer paper. Iron the pillowcase to remove any wrinkles and excess moisture.

    • 5

Place the transfer paper, image side down on the pillowcase, aligning it where you want the design. Grasp the iron handle with both hands and press down on the image. Make slow, 20-second passes over the entire width of the transfer paper as you firmly press down. Repeat the process moving the iron vertically over the design. Concentrate on the edges and press as hard as possible to ensure a proper transfer.

    • 6

Move the pillowcase onto another flat surface to cool for two minutes. Slowly lift the corner of the paper backing, pulling the paper in a smooth motion. If the image begins to lift with the backing, you did not apply enough pressure. Return the backing and iron again.

Wash the pillowcase inside out before placing it on the pillow. Always wash the pillowcase in cold water on gentle cycle, and do not use bleach. Air dry the pillowcase to prolong the high-quality appearance of the design.
