How to Use Comforter Covers

A comforter cover is like a huge pillowcase for a comforter. A comforter is also called a duvet, French for down bedding. If you have a comforter and want to change the look of your bedroom, a comforter cover can do that for you.
You also can use a comforter cover to reduce the amount of laundry you need to do by just doing the cover, and not the entire comforter. In northern European countries, a duvet or comforter cover is used in place of sheets, which simplifies making the bed.

If you cannot find a comforter cover in the size, pattern or colors you want, it is easy to make a comforter cover yourself. Use two flat sheets that are the same size as your comforter. Wash and dry the sheets. Fabrics typically have a right side, in which the pattern or colors are a little more intense than the wrong. Place the two right sides together facing each other, matching the bottom sides together. Pin the bottom edges together and then pin up each of the sides. When both sides and the bottom are pinned together, sew the entire seam with a straight stitch, eight to 10 stitches to the inch. This can be done by machine quite quickly, but it also can be done by hand if you don't have a machine. On the side, leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance, and on the bottom, put the line of stitches where the sheet hem gives way to the sheet. Then sew up the other side. Turn the comforter cover right side out. Use some form of closure to hold the comforter in after it is slid into the cover. You can use round Velcro pieces called coins. Some come with a strong adhesive that will just stick to the fabric and the two sides are already attached to each other, so just put them where you would like to "button" the pocket. Remove the paper backing off the Velcro coin to expose the adhesive and firmly attach the one side to the fabric. Then remove the paper backing from the other side of the coin and press it firmly onto the fabric on the other side of the opening so the two are joined. You should now be able to pull these two attached pieces of Velcro apart from each other and rejoin them. Repeat this process, placing another Velcro coin every 10 to 12 inches from the last one across the open end of the comforter cover. The adhesive will take up to 24 hours to get fully strong.

Consider changing the look and feel of your bedroom for different seasons of the year. Flannel sheets are great in colder weather because they don't feel like ice when you climb into them. Flannel sheets also frequently have holiday motifs. With two or three comforter covers, you could have different looks for different seasons. Flannel for the cold winter season; percale for spring or summer when nights are warmer and the coolness of the sheets as one gets into bed is a delight.

If you wanted to use the comforter cover as a top sheet, the way it is done in Scandinavian countries, you would only need a fitted bottom sheet, pillowcases or shams and a comforter in a cover. This makes it easier to tidy the bed in the morning by just arranging the comforter, cover and all, over the mattress. Also, if you have a comforter cover and a spare, you can have one in the laundry and a fresh one on your bed. You actually have less bedding to wash this way, making it a way to save over time.
