Contemporary Bedding Ideas

Texture

• Most of the texture in your bedding should be smooth, but you can add visual interest to your contemporary bedding by mixing in textures. For example, you can pair a decorative wool pillow with cotton sheets or an organic slubbed fabric comforter with ribbed sheets. The textures you want to avoid are laces, scallops, ruffles and fringe. These textures will look out of place when used for contemporary bedding.

Color

• Neutral colors, such as black, white and gray, punched with bright colors are common in contemporary bedding. For example, you may choose a bedding set that has gray, white and cherry red or black, white and bright yellow. The idea is to make sure that whichever colors are in your bedding are a pairing of a mostly neutral palette with a touch of bright color.

  Another popular contemporary bedding color combination is mocha, tan and turquoise. This color scheme has become popular in other types of décor and interior design, as well as event design. For a feminine spin, try mocha, ivory and pink.

Design Pattern

• You should choose a pattern that has clean lines. You can choose several styles to mix and match for your bedding, such as putting a square design with solid and striped pillows, but a clean design is essential for your bedding to be contemporary. Florals are out of the question, as well as small, repeating motifs.

  Abstract shapes, geometric shapes, circles and dots, and stripes are all examples of clean, contemporary design patterns. If you want, you can just stick with solids. Simplicity is the hallmark of contemporary design.

Pillows and Bedskirts

• Avoid pillows that have lace edges or fringe and anything with a patchwork design or floral motif. These elements are not indicative of a contemporary bedroom and are not well-suited for this décor.

  If you are using a bedskirt, make sure the edges are straight and smooth, not ruffled or scalloped. The principle here is to keep with the look of clean lines.
