Where to Find Twin XL Comforters

Twin extra long, or Twin XL, is a size of bed most commonly found in dorm rooms. Most major retailers will start selling sheets and accessories for them around back-to-school time, when students will be scrambling for them. Finding bedding for this unusual sized bed during off seasons can be tricky.
  1. Catalogs

    • Check catalogs, specifically those that cater to college students. You can find a variety of twin XL sheets and comforters in most dorm-room decorating catalogs, including more solid and sophisticated colors than you might expect. In addition to print catalogs geared at college students, a variety of online retailers are geared toward the sale of twin XL sheets, bedding and other merchandise that will look proportionate on a twin XL bed.

    College Town Thrift Stores

    • Nearly every part of the country has a college town nearby. Wait until the end of the school year--move-out season--and search the thrift stores closest to that institution. Many students, rather than take home a comforter they will have no use for, will donate them to the thrift stores nearest their college or university. Keep looking, as a thrift store's selection can change daily. The days just before and right after students move out will be the best times for finding a twin XL comforter among the piles of donated items.

    Freecycle and Craigslist

    • Freecycle and Craigslist are both online resources. Freecycle is a worldwide organization with branches in nearly every location. Members post wanted ads, or giveaway ads. Items are given and taken freely, without any expectation of payment or barter.
Craigslist is an online classified advertisement system. People post items for sale, or wanted items, as well as a price range and location. Posting a wanted ad for twin XL comforters in a local forum, or a local area you know has college students, may turn up some results.

    Find a Quilter

    • Find a local quilter who is willing to take on the project. Usually this will cost more than an off-the-rack selection, but you have more of a chance of getting exactly the comforter you desire. Find your local quilt shop or craft store, and see if they have a message board where quilters and crafters advertise their services. Sometimes, local seamstresses and quilters will hang a notice at local laundromats as well. If this is not within your range of possibilities, perhaps you can take a class and learn to make a comforter to exactly your specifications.
