Two classic and common natural fiber alternatives to down are cotton and wool. Each is spun to create a soft hand and loft, and the filled comforter blanket or mattress cover is stitched to secure the material and prevent clumping and uneven shifting. Widely available and often marketed under an organic label, they can be more costly than man-made down alternatives, but their natural quality and durability make them a good investment.
Silk and other processed and extruded plant-derived materials such as bamboo are also popular alternatives to down. Bamboo, linen and other plant-based fibers are sometimes marketed and sold under the trade name Tencel or natural microfiber. Silk has the softness of down without the loft but with good insulating properties while remaining breathable. Bamboo and natural microfibers have a similar loft to silk and are a bit more dense in texture and slightly heavier in weight.
The most common, popular and affordable down alternatives made into oversized king bedding are constructed with synthetic fills. These down alternatives vary in composition, including polyester, microfiber and nylon. They generally seek to closely mimic the fluffy loft and lightweight nature of down. Man-made down alternatives are often marketed and sold under trademarked names such as Primaloft, Synthetic Down, Comforell and Angel Soft or under store brand labels.
