Down Comforter Information

Down comforters are believed to offer the highest level of quality available in bedding. Made from the soft under-feathers of geese or ducks, down comforters provide excellent insulation for supreme warmth and comfort.
  1. Construction Methods

    • Most comforters are constructed using box or quilted techniques that create channels within the materials that are filled with down. Construction methods should prevent down from shifting and retain breathability that allows moisture to evaporate through the fabric.

    Ratings

    • Fill power reflects the space 1 oz. of down will take. These ratings are important factors to consider since higher ratings from 600 to 700 are great for cold temperatures, while 400 to 500 ratings work best for warmer regions.

    Types

    • Goose feathers are more expensive than duck feathers, and products with better construction methods, materials and higher thread counts cost more than traditional bedding.

    Considerations

    • People who are allergic to down feathers and dust molecules should consider buying synthetic materials and use a duvet cover or other protective material to block dirt, dust and mold spores.

    Care

    • Since most comforters last for 20 years, look for products with a quality warranty. Air the comforter out before using it and every three months afterward. Wash per the comforter per manufacturer's instructions to prevent voiding the warranty and store it in an airtight container during the off-season.
