How to Design a Room Comforter Set

Measure the mattress (or go to Land's End comforters, select a product, and go to size chart for accuracy). Add 20 inches to the length of the mattress and 40 inches to the width. You will need two lengths for the comforter top and two for the bottom. Calculate how much fabric you will need for your bed size.

Cut the fabric into four even pieces. Then split two of them into two. Sew two of the narrow pieces on either side of a wider piece. Repeat. Trim the sides evenly so the the finished piece is the correct measurement.

Purchase enough cording to fit around the finished edge of the comforter plus 12 inches more to be sure you have enough. Sew the cording on the outside edge of one of the finished pieces, with the raw edge facing outward. Stitch it on, starting at the bottom edge, overlapping the two ends in an x-shape with the raw ends towards the edge.

Place the wrong sides of the two large pieces together and sew the seams, leaving a three-foot opening at the bottom with the cording ends. Turn the comforter right side out. Stuff the duvet inside, tacking the corners to the comforter corners. Or, if the duvet has a tape sewn at the corners, take some seam binding and cut it about 14 inches long. Fold it in half and stitch the folded end to the inside corner seams of the comforter, then tie the ribbons through the duvet loop. Slipstitch the opening of the comforter together.

Measure your pillows, and add two inches to the length and to the width. Cut the contrast fabric into four pieces of the measured size. Placing the wrong sides together, sew the seams, leaving a 15-inch opening in one of the long sides. Turn the pillow cover right side out, and stuff it with a pillow. Slipstitch the opening closed. Sew the tassels onto the four corners.
