Definition of Throw Bedding

Throw bedding adds a decorative touch to any living room or bedroom, while serving a functional purpose as well. Throw blankets sit folded at the bottom of the bed or over the back of the couch, providing style and an extra layer of warmth within easy reach. Throw pillows serve primarily a decorative purpose, adding color and style to any room.
  1. Throw Blankets

    • Throw blankets are small blankets that provide both warmth and style. They are used most commonly in two ways: thrown over the back of a couch or chair or folded at the foot of the bed. Thrown over the back of the couch, a throw blanket adds color and style to your living room and lies within easy reach to fend off cold on chilly nights. Similarly, folded at the bottom of the bed, a throw blanket adds style to the bedroom and an extra layer of warmth to lay over a comforter at night.

    Throw Pillows

    • Throw pillows come in all shapes, styles and fabrics. Some are primarily decorative and may be too embellished to be comfortable, while others serve functional purposes as well. These can provide back or head support when displayed on a couch or chair. When used on a bed, throw pillows contribute to a stylish bedspread but are removed before sleeping.

    Fabric

    • Throw bedding is constructed in a large variety of fabrics, so there are sure to be pillows and blankets that match the décor of a room and provide the feel you want. Cotton fabrics are breathable and hypoallergenic, while wool is a durable, traditional option. Fleece and faux fur throw bedding is cozy and soft, while microfiber is incredibly breathable, lightweight and soft.

    Weaves

    • Most throw blankets are constructed with either a thermal or conventional weave. Conventional weaves, such as microfiber, are tight and make well-insulated blankets. Thermal weaves are looser, so they are less warm and better as an extra layer on cold nights. Because they are not meant to provide warmth, the weaves of throw pillows are not as important to consider as their fabric and style.

    Sizes

    • Throw blankets are smaller than regular bedding, measuring about 50 by 60 inches; even a twin comforter measures about 68 by 86 inches. This makes them the perfect size for draping over the couch or for adding an extra layer of warmth but they are too small to be used as sleeping blankets on their own. Throw pillows come in a range of sizes but most measure between 12 and 18 inches in diameter.
