Although a queen size mattress measures 60 inches by 80 inches, variations can make comparing sheets a complex process. Fabric selections can include long staple, cotton sateen, viscose from bamboo, charmeuse and Italian wood fiber. Factors includes thread count, design, brand name and cost. Measuring how much fabric suits your queen mattress is key.

  1. Size Variations

    • Sheet size can vary by manufacturer. A queen fitted sheet usually measures 60 inches by 80 inches on its top surface. A flat sheet measures approximately 90 by 102 inches. Some manufacturers produce flat sheets ranging from 80 inches by 84 inches to 90 inches by 106 inches.

    Depth of Mattress

    • Mattresses measure up to 12 inches deep for older styles and 15 to 16 inches deep for newer, pillow-top styles. Fitted queen sheets need a deeper pocket to cover the high mattress sides. A fitted sheet with too much depth can accumulate excess fabric on the middle of the bed. Flat sheets need extra length to tuck under the mattress.

    Adjustable Queen Beds

    • A split queen mattress includes two mattresses, each 30 inches by 80 inches, and needs a split queen sheet set.
