Filling

• A duvet's filling can be natural or synthetic. Natural filling includes cotton and duck and goose down. Light, warm and nonallergenic synthetic filling includes polyester or hollowfiber. Micro fiber contains air pockets that trap air within the filling to provide insulation like a natural down-filled duvet.

Heat Properties

• Types of double duvets vary in the amount of warmth they provide. A tog measures the duvet's heat in units of thermal resistance. A higher tog rating refers to a warmer duvet. For example, a summer duvet can rate 4.5 tog, a spring and fall duvet can rate 12 or 13.5 tog and a winter duvet can rate 15 tog. Some manufacturers produce an electric-heated duvet with an auto switch-off timer and overheat-protection system.

Care

• Correct cleaning of the double duvet can help maintain the materials and extend the duvet's life. Some duvets are machine washable, while others are dry clean only. Water at 130 degrees Fahrenheit and hotter can kill mites, including dust mites that affect allergies.
