French Braid Quilt Directions

The French braid quilt is a traditional pattern suited to scraps. Made from small strips, you can snip pieces from old clothing to make a commemorative quilt reminiscent of the interwoven hair braid.
  1. Preparation

    • Cut your scrap fabric into strips three times longer than they are wide. An easy to work with size would be 2 1/2 inches by 7 1/2 inches. The bigger you want the quilt, the more strips you need. Choose three coordinating colors or patterns in non-stretch fibers for best results.

    Stitching

    • Sew two strips together in a "V" shape with the short end of one being sewn to the long edge of the other strip. Sew the pieces with the right sides facing and use a 1/4-inch seam. Continue adding strips by sewing the long side of the new strip to the short end of a previously sewn strip, continuing the herringbone pattern. Sew multiple panels together to create your quilt.

    Trimming

    • Trim your panel edges into smooth rectangles by using a rotary cutter, mat and ruler. Sew each panel to another along the long edge of each panel to create the quilt. Sew together with the right sides together and using a 1/4-inch seam.
