Zafu Sewing Instructions

A zafu is a small round pillow drawn from Japanese culture. It is often used for meditation during yoga or placed on the floor to be used as a cushion. When pairing the zafu with a zabuton, or rectangular cushioned mat, the zafu provides a nice cushion to elevate your pelvis and allows you to work on improving your posture. To make your zafu, choose fabrics that will be cool and comfortable for you to sit on for long periods of time. Fabrics such as a cotton blend will also allow you to wash your cushion.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and print your zafu pattern. If you don't already have a pattern to make your zafu, you can view instructions and print one off one of the following websites: Urban Decline, Fiber Organics, or Buddha Mind.

    • 2

Cut your fabric according to the pattern. Cut a piece of fabric to be 65 inches long by 7 inches wide for the outside of your pillow. Cut two circles, 13 inches in diameter, for the top and bottom of your pillow.

    • 3

Create pleats in your long strip of fabric, every 4 inches. Using your measuring tape, measure 4 1/2 inches of fabric and fold 1/2 inch back. Pin the fabric and iron it so that it will be ready for sewing.

    • 4

Pin the long strip of fabric together with one of the circles to prepare for sewing. Make sure these are inside-out at this point, as you will turn right-side out once you are done sewing with the machine. Pin your zipper in place along the long strip of fabric.

    • 5

Sew the first side of your fabric and zipper together using your sewing machine.

    • 6

Pin the other side of the long strip of fabric to your other circle to prepare for sewing.

    • 7

Sew the other side of your pillow together, leaving about an inch of space for stuffing your pillow.

    • 8

Remove all pins and turn your pillow right-side out.

    • 9

Stuff your pillow with filler and hand-stitch the ends together to complete your pillow.
