Flowers That Have Different Sizes of Petals

Thousands of different kinds of flowers color the Earth today, and they feature just as many different shapes and sizes of flower petals. The petals of a flower help the growth of the plant. They attract various pollinators, such as birds, bees and other insects. The vast selection of petal sizes and colors makes it more likely that these pollinators will be attracted to the flowers and natural pollination will continue.
  1. Roses

    • One particular flower featuring many different sizes of petals is the rose. The many different varieties of roses include tea rosea, floribunda roses, miniature roses, climbing roses and tree roses. The petals of these roses may vary from large and showy to small and delicate. Some roses have very large blossoms because they are double-blooming roses. The petals of double-blooming roses are larger than those of single-blooming roses. Depending upon the type of rose, some petals have smooth, round edges, while others may have a ruffled edge. Miniature roses have much smaller petals and are the smallest type of all roses.

    Violets

    • The many different species of violets also have varying petal sizes. Among these varieties are African violets, miniature violets, trailing violets and standard violets. The more common varieties usually have similar petals that are flat and smooth. However, the more modern varieties can have petals that are fringed, wavy, or curled. Violet bloom sizes may also vary. These may be single (having only five petals), semi-double (having six to nine petals) or double (having 10 or more petals.)

    Tulips

    • Tulips also have a wide variety of different petals. The petals of the tulip can vary in size, color, shape and height. The varieties include single tulips, double tulips and fringed tulips, as well as many more. The petals can be rounded, pointy or fringed. Some are curled and double-bloomed, similar to peonies, or shaped to resemble lilies. Tulips have one of the largest selections in variances of petal size and shapes.

    Lilies

    • Another flower that can have a variety of different petal sizes is the lily. The different varieties of lilies include Asiatic, Oriental, Trumpet, American and many more. The petals of the lily can range from being long and broad and facing upward to being shorter and facing downward. Some lily petals have a wavy edge, and others have a smooth edge. Others curl backwards toward the stem so much that the petals overlap.
