Tutorial for Sewing a Duvet Cover

Duvet covers protect your comforter from spills, dust and whatever life may throw at it. If the cover gets dirty, you can slip it off of the comforter and toss it in the wash. When shopping for a duvet cover, the cost may leave you flabbergasted, especially when you consider that you can quickly whip up your own cover, using two matching flat sheets. If you want a reversible cover, simply choose two contrasting sheets and turn the cover over whenever you want a change.

Things You'll Need

  • ½ yard sew-on hook and loop closure (Velcro), 1 inch wide
  • Scissors
  • Ruler or tape measure
  • 2 flat bedsheets in the size of your bed
  • Straight pins
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the hook and loop closure into six 3-inch-long strips. Separate each strip.

    • 2

Place the rough, hook sides of the closure on the wrong side of the bottom edge of one of the flat sheets. Space them evenly across the bottom, about 1 inch from the edge of the sheet. Pin in place.

    • 3

Stitch the hook closures to the sheet, using a zig-zag stitch. Sew the closures on all four sides.

    • 4

Arrange the fuzzy side of the closures on the wrong side of the bottom edge of the other flat sheet. Space them so that they will match up with the hook sides when the sheets put together, about 1 inch from the bottom. Pin in place, then sew to the sheet with a zig-zag stitch.

    • 5

Stretch the sheet with the fuzzy closures flat on the floor or a large table. The right side should face up. Carefully place the other sheet on top of the first one, right side facing in and the wrong side up. Line up the sides and corners, then pin together along the two sides and the top.

    • 6

Sew the two sides and top together with a straight stitch, using a ½-inch seam allowance. Trim the top two corners. Be careful that you don't cut through your stitches. Turn the duvet cover right side out and slide it onto your comforter or duvet. Push the hook and loop closures together to fasten.
