How to Inflate a Blow-Up Bed

Blow-up beds feature many of the amenities of traditional beds, but in an easily transportable and low-cost design. Advanced blow-up bed models include frames, adjustable settings, pillow tops and even memory foam. More basic models are commonly referred to as air mattresses, and are a staple of many campers throughout the country. While air mattresses often require an external air source to inflate, such as an air pump or simple lung power, air beds tend to make use of an air pump built directly into the bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out the bed in its final location. Remove any rocks or other objects from the area.

    • 2

Check the air release valves around the bed and make sure they are closed. Look carefully, as some models feature multiple valves. Firmly shut any open valves.

    • 3

Insert the air mattress plug into an electrical outlet. If an external air pump needs to be used, insert its plug into an outlet instead.

    • 4

Connect the air pump to the intake valve if an air pump is being used.

    • 5

Push and hold the appropriate button on the air mattress or air pump to inflate the bed. Continue until the bed is fully inflated, then let go of the button -- the timing varies depending on the type of pump and the size of the bed. Quickly remove the air pump and close the intake valve if necessary.

    • 6

Lay down on the bed to check its firmness. If the blow-up bed came with an inflation control, use it to add or remove air and adjust the mattress to a comfortable setting.
