Finish Size for Comforters

Comforters come in many different sizes, and whether you are sewing one or shopping for one, ensuring yours will be the right size for your bed is important. With an appropriately sized comforter, you will be completely covered when lying in bed without the comforter reaching all the way to the floor. The ideal size comforter will cover the mattress top and sides and reach just to the top of the bed skirt covering the box spring foundation.
  1. Twin

    • Standard twin comforters measure 64 inches wide by 86 inches long. Sometimes referred to as a single bed, they are best suited for one child or small adult. The same comforters can also be used on daybeds, trundle beds or bunk beds. Longer twin beds are also available, called extra long twin or twin XL. The comforters for these beds measure 68 inches wide by 90 inches long. These beds add 5 inches to the length and are commonly used for taller teenagers or in college dorm rooms.

    Full

    • Full beds are sometimes called double beds. These were the most common size bed for couples in the early 20th century, but many taller adults today find this size too small. The comforters measure 78 inches wide by 86 inches long. Sometimes full size comforters are not available in a certain pattern or brand, and a full/queen size measuring 86 inches wide by 86 long is sold for use on both bed sizes. These are typically slightly large for a full bed and slightly small for a queen bed.

    Queen

    • Comforters that fit queen beds measure 86 to 92 inches wide by 86 to 92 inches long. This size is the most common bed size sold in the U.S. today. Most couples and even many single adults prefer this size to have enough room to stretch out in bed. Most master bedrooms and medium to large size bedrooms are big enough to include a queen size bed. Very tall or large couples or those who have pets or children sleep in the bed with them may prefer a larger king size bed.

    King

    • The standard king, or Eastern king comforters are 108 to 110 inches wide by 90 to 92 inches long. This size will also fit two twin beds put side by side, which some couples prefer so that one side of the bed can be soft and one firm. Longer and narrower California, or Western king beds, use California king size comforters which measure 107 inches wide by 96 inches long, though these can be difficult to find and a regular king comforter may be used if necessary.
