How to Choose an Interior Paint Color to Complement Wood Flooring

Complementary colors fall on opposite sides of the color wheel and when used in combination will create depth and dimension in a room. Different woods contain subtle color variations that are brought out by the use of complementary paint colors. Take this principle into consideration when choosing a paint color to work with your wood flooring.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose shades of green or yellow-green when installing flooring with red undertones, such as mahogany, redwood or cedar. Lighter shades of green will make the room seem more open, while darker greens will give your space a cozier feel.

    • 2

Select a paint color that falls in the blue and blue-green families, such as sea green, mint or turquoise, to complement flooring constructed from orange-toned woods. These include maple, oak and fir.

    • 3

Locate a paint color that falls in the violet, red-violet or blue-violet families to complement flooring constructed from birch, bamboo or pine. These floors contain yellow undertones that will be enhanced by light or dark shades of violet/blues.

    • 4

Choose a neutral, warm or cool paint color of any shade when working with flooring that contains brown undertones, such as walnut, teak or ash. Brown is a neutral color that works with any shade.
