The Best Way to Paint Cinderblock

Whether you've moved into a home with cinder block walls or want to make inexpensive but attractive bookshelves, using the proper masonry paint is a must. Cinder blocks are made of concrete, which is quite porous and requires sealing with latex primer prior to painting. Whether you plan to use your cinder blocks inside or outside, exterior paint is the best choice for painting them. Turn your boring gray cinder blocks into brightly colored home decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep dirt off the surface of the cinder blocks with a wire brush.

    • 2

Spray the blocks with a pressure washer or hose to loosen and rinse away any remaining dirt. Allow the blocks to dry in the sun.

    • 3

Use a paint roller to paint the blocks with exterior latex masonry primer, often called acrylic block filler. Press on the roller to squeeze the primer into the small holes in the concrete. Let the primer dry for six to 12 hours.

    • 4

Apply two thick coats of 100-percent acrylic latex house paint, allowing the blocks to dry for six hours between the first and second coats. Use a fresh paint roller and plenty of pressure to fill the holes.

    • 5

Allow the blocks to dry overnight before moving or touching them.
