Colors to Paint Center Hall Foyers

A center hall foyer is the immediate focal point when guests enter your home. This space should be inviting and should tie in with the rest of your design scheme throughout the remainder of the house. Choosing the colors to paint center hall foyers depends on several different factors including size, personal preference and the feeling you would like to evoke when your guests view your home's entry way.
  1. Small Foyers

    • A small foyer can feel cramped, particularly if you have a lot of furniture in it. Choose lighter colors for this space to avoid having the visual effect of the walls closing in on the space. Light pastels, white or cream are ideal colors for a small foyer. Additional considerations about lighting should also play into the decision. Light colors will reflect light and make the space feel larger. If the foyer does not receive natural light, you can bring in brightness with wall sconces or accent lamps.

    Large Foyers

    • A large foyer gives you more options when it comes to color choices, but you should still take care not to use overly dark colors that will close the foyer in. If you do wish to use a dark color, it is best to refrain from using it on all the walls; instead, pick one accent wall for this shade and use a lighter, complementary hue on the other walls. Lighting is also important in large foyers or they can appear dank and uninviting.

    Going Bold

    • Bold colors can be used in a foyer to make a statement when your visitor walks in the door. Once again, however, the color should not close in the space. Accent walls work best for bold colors, with the remaining walls painted either white or ivory or another neutral, depending on the color group that you chose for the accent wall. For example, if the accent color is bright red, the remaining walls could be painted white.

    Tying in Your Design

    • The foyer is the lead-in for the rest of your home and it is important to tie your design theme together in this space. This is the first area of your home that your visitors will see and by keeping with the same color scheme as the rest of your home, you create a feeling of visual unity throughout the space. If you have a predominant color in your home, this should be displayed in the foyer, either as all the walls painted in this color, or with an accent wall.
