Fun Ways to Paint a Bedroom for a Young Girl

For a young girl, a bedroom is more than a place to sleep. It's also a playroom, a den, a place to entertain friends and somewhere to escape to when she wants to be alone. Inspiring bedroom decor is easily achieved with imaginative painting, and is not difficult to do if you use templates or stencils to help with more complicated shapes or shapes that demand accuracy to look good.
  1. Bold Colors

    • Being bold with color doesn't mean you have to go ultra-garish or overwhelming. If a girl's favorite color is vibrant pink, you can still use this to paint the bedroom, even if you prefer the walls to be in a more muted shade. Use the vibrant pink for details such as doorknobs, door hinges, window frames, or a dado or picture rail. Limit strong colors on walls by painting just one wall in the strong color to create an accent or feature in the room, while painting the remaining walls in more muted, complementary shades.

    Stencils

    • By using stencils to paint on walls, you can create intricate mural or frieze designs. Choose a theme for the room by taking inspiration from a little girl's favorite cartoon or TV characters. Give stencils of castles or fairies a realistic background by painting the bottom half of the wall in green to represent grass and the top half of the wall in blue to represent the sky. Undulate the green paint across the wall to simulate hills.

    Spots and Stripes

    • Strong geometric designs, such as spots or stripes, painted in bright colors give a little girl's room a funky, modern look. Use a plumb-bob to find the true vertical or a spirit level to find the true horizontal in order to create accurate stripes. Paint the entire wall the lightest color of stripe, then place decorators masking tape to mark the edges of the darker stripes. Gently tear off the masking tape while the paint is still wet for a crisp edge to the stripe. Make a stencil to paint spots by cutting a circular hole in a sheet of construction paper. Hold the stencil up to the wall where you want the spot, then dab paint on the wall through the hole using either a sponge or a stencil brush.

    Ceilings

    • Ceilings are often overlooked but are an equally important part of the decor. Turn a plain white ceiling into a summer sky by first painting it in a light blue, then using a sponge to gently dab on white paint to represent clouds. For a night sky, first paint the ceiling in a deep blue, then paint on pinpricks of white paint as stars, and add a crescent moon as a finishing touch.
