Textured Paint Finishes Over Damaged Drywall

Textured paint may be applied over drywall to hide any damaged or imperfect areas. Textured paint adds a small amount of grit and movement to the surface but may not always completely hide imperfections or damage. The paint is often only a few centimeters thick and is not considered a heavy plaster. Practice the application technique before painting the damaged drywall to ensure it is the paint finish you are looking for.
  1. Tools

    • Instead of using a paint tray, pour the textured paint into a large paint bucket. Stir the paint with a long wooden stir stick when getting ready to apply. The paint must be stirred approximately every 15 minutes. When applying textured paint, use a thick nap roller. The thicker nap rollers generally state on the label they are to be used with textured paint. These measure about 3/4 inches in length. A sea sponge or old chip brush are used to apply paint in hard-to-reach areas or to paint the perimeter of the drywall.

    Application

    • You apply most textured paint finishes with a roller, similar to painting a wall. However, when rolling the paint onto the surface, roll in all different directions instead of just horizontal or vertical strokes. For a more random look, use a damp sea sponge or other tool to stamp the surface with paint. Cover the damaged drywall areas with several coats to disguise imperfections.

    Types of Paint

    • A variety of different texture paints are on the market. Some paints have added grit created by sand or other aggregates added into the paint. These are either premixed, or you add the component into the paint yourself. Create your own texture paint by adding sand into regular latex paint. Joint compound mixed with latex paint, with or without sand, also creates a textured paint finish. These finishes will cover slightly damaged drywall, such as nail pops, dings or imperfect seams. Still, you may continue to notice these damaged areas after the textured paint has been applied. For complete coverage of damaged drywall, use a thicker plaster applied with a trowel.

    Additional Tips and Tricks

    • Always practice your method on a piece of cardboard or extra piece of drywall. Do not attempt without practice first. Once the texture paint has been applied, it is difficult to remove without a bit of labor. Don't forget to experiment with different color combinations. For an added touch, finishes can be color washed or stained for added dimension and depth.
