What Kind of Paint Sticks to Tiles?

Replacing tile is expensive, back-breaking work, especially if the old tile must be pried out. Painting, whether it is a temporary cover-up or a permanent solution, is an answer that saves money and time. It can also add a new look, even if only some of the tiles are painted in a decorative pattern. The right paint will help ensure the tiles look good and the paint job lasts.
  1. Epoxy

    • Epoxy paint is designed to stick to most any surface and endure traffic and regular use. It is typically more expensive than other types of paint, however, and it can be more difficult to apply without leaving brush strokes. Certain types of epoxy paint also require a top coat. It can be difficult to find epoxy paint in a flat or eggshell-type finish, since it is nearly always high-gloss.

    Oil-based

    • Oil-based paint will adhere to tiles as long as the surface is properly prepared. It is not as durable as epoxy paint, but is suitable for tiles that don't receive constant use, such as a backsplash or tiles in rarely used areas. Oil-based paint also tends to show brush strokes, so it is important to use either a high-quality brush or a roller to apply the paint to a tile.

    Primer

    • Primer can make a big difference in how well paint adheres to tile. It is possible to use another type of paint, such as latex, on tile if the surface is properly prepared. The primer should be matched to the type of paint used. For example, an oil-based primer should be used under an oil-based paint. Use several coats of primer to ensure good adhesion and coverage.

    Kits

    • Commercially prepared kits for painting tile are available. These kits contain all the products necessary to prepare and successfully paint over tile. In most cases, an epoxy paint is used. These kits may be more expensive than purchasing paint and supplies separately, but they also eliminate the need to choose the right paint and primer, and come with detailed instructions for painting tile.
