Decorative Wall Molding and Frame Ideas

Molding adds style, sophistication and dimension to any room. You can use it to frame the ceiling, create frames on the walls or add it as a decorative element that makes your room unique. Molding adds a personalized touch to the room and it can add to the value of a home without requiring any expensive remodeling.
  1. Chair Rail

    • Chair rail molding goes across the wall horizontally and typically rests at the level of a chair's backing. A chair rail is not only decorative but also helps to protect the walls against scratches or dents from chairs. Chair rails were commonly used in the dining room but they are now frequently used as a decorative fixture in other rooms as well. Consider using a chair rail to separate two shades of paint on the wall, one color above the rail and a complementary shade below it. Or use a chair rail to separate a bottom layer of wallpaper from the top layer of a solid color of paint.

    Picture Frame Molding

    • Picture frame molding is a type of panel molding. Picture frame molding looks like an empty picture frame affixed to a wall. This is common in classic designs, especially colonial-style homes, and is often paired with a chair rail. Consider using picture frame molding in hallways or foyers by placing evenly spaced frames on the bottom half of a wall with a chair rail. Add a little extra style by placing a picture frame molding within another one. For example, use a solid rectangular picture frame and place a slightly smaller oval frame within it to add dimension to the room.

    Wall Frame Art

    • Pair a traditional picture frame molding with other decorative items to create wall frame art. Consider using picture frame molding on a living room wall and placing wallpaper within each frame while leaving the rest of the wall a solid color. If you want to avoid the use of wallpaper, consider painting a different color within the picture frame molding to add contrast. For a child’s room, consider adding a chalkboard surface within the molding for an interactive room decoration.

    Recessed Paneling

    • Recessed paneling is one of the more expensive wall molding options. These full-length panels come from a solid plank of wood that is carved to give a shadow box or decorative effect. The entire panel is then affixed to the bottom half of a wall as a backdrop. Consider using a beaded plank molding, which is essentially a solid sheet of wood made to look like panels, for the bottom half of a wall. Top the beaded plank with a chair railing to give the home a 19th-century look.
