Kinds of Paint to Hide Wall Imperfections

Textured

• Textured paint creates a light texture all over the walls that creates dimension and a totally different feel, when compared with regular, nontextured paint. Textured paint has many grooves and bumps, so only choose this paint if you want a specific look or if you need to hide tiny holes, dents and other more brutal imperfections from wear and tear. You can choose matte, gloss or semi-gloss textured paints, depending on your needs. Matte textured paint isn't as easy to clean as paint with a light sheen because the glossy effect makes it easier for stains to come off with a sponge and water.

Matte

• "Real Simple" magazine says matte paint types are the best for walls with many imperfections. They recommend using matte paint for bedrooms, ceilings, dining areas and living rooms. It has a light, non-shiny finish that creates a neutral feel in the room. Choose from an assortment of different types of matte paint formulas. Latex matte paint has an acrylic base that allows it to dry quickly. You can also find rubber-based matte paints or even matte paint made with natural ingredients such as milk.

Eggshell

• Eggshell paints are made with similar ingredients as matte paint so it, too, can hide flaws, but this type has a different finish. This paint has an ultra-smooth surface and it absorbs less light, making it a favored paint in dining and living rooms. You can also use eggshell in halls, kitchens and bathrooms, but it's not as easy to clean as other types of paint.

Gloss or Semi-Gloss

• Gloss and semi-gloss can hide initial imperfections, but in time it can start to reveal new flaws that show up on walls. That is why these types of paints are at the bottom of the list. Yet, various types of paint serve different purposes and some are better suited for certain rooms. Choose gloss or semi-gloss paint for bathrooms and kitchens. Glossy paint is easy to wipe clean because it has a slippery texture. It makes a difference when you need to wipe spaghetti sauce stains off the walls. Both gloss and semi-gloss can hide imperfections to begin with, but you must wash this paint with a sponge and soapy water when new flaws show up.
