Recommended Paint Colors for a Brick Fireplace

While painting a fireplace may pose its own special challenges, if you are up for the project, it can be painted any color you can think of. It will need to be primed and, depending on if the fireplace is operative or not, you might need to use special fireplace paint. Whether you choose a classic white, a bold hue or a neutral color, options exist for any space.
  1. Classic

    • White is a classic choice when painting brick. With a combination of plaster and joint compound, you can create a base that you can then apply paint to. Once the primer layer is complete, sand around the mortar lines to smooth the surface and redefine the brick work. Once dried and sanded, choose a shade of white to paint the fireplace. A bright white, an off-white or a blue tinted white may be appropriate depending on the rest of the decor of the room.

    Bold

    • Prime the brick work and, once dry, paint a stunning bold hue over the bricks to create a modern look. The fireplace will become an instant focal point in the room, so choose your color wisely. Cherry red, lemon yellow and a range of bright blue and green tones work well for this type of application. Repeat the color elsewhere in the room to unify the look. For instance, pick up the kelly green in the fireplace, and use it in pillows for the sofa or bed, in the draperies or in accessories. Strategically place a few items with the color around the room.

    Neutral

    • Beige, tan, gray, taupe and chocolate hues are options for painting the fireplace a neutral color. For a contemporary look, paint the fireplace the same color as the walls. Another idea is to contrast the walls with a darker tone, or replicate the color of a feature wall in the fireplace. This idea works well if the fireplace is situated opposite the feature wall. Another option is to create a monochromatic neutral design with varying shades of gray. Paint the walls a dark hue and the fireplace a slightly lighter shade of gray.

    Other Ideas

    • If you choose a color to paint the fireplace, you might want to restore the natural brick. Whether you want to have it sandblasted to its original color or paint it a red brick tone, the rustic red works well with many styles of decor. Or you can create a two-tone design using two complementary or contrasting colors of paint. For instance, paint the mantel and any decorative elements in red and the brick work in black to create a dynamic and colorful focal point for the room.
