What Wall Colors Go With Burgundy Furniture?

A rich reddish-purple color with blue undertones, burgundy is a complex shade that can easily dominate a space. The wall color you select influences the overall design scheme and the role your burgundy furniture plays in that scheme. When making your decision for wall color, consider the texture of your furniture's upholstery as well as the overall style to help you create the right color scheme for your space.
  1. Leather Upholstery

    • Leather is a sleek, yet warm, material that works well in both modern and traditional designs. If you want a cool palette with a more contemporary or urban appeal, play to the blue undertones in the burgundy. Select an equally bold blue to cool down a large, sunny space. If the room is smaller, select a blue-gray color for your walls. If you want to play to the warmer side of the leather and burgundy, select a buttery yellow with orange undertones. Control the heat with shades of white and blue in accessories and window treatments.

    Fabric Upholstery

    • The density of upholstery fabric gives the burgundy color a rich texture, with more visual depth than leather. Without any pattern in the fabric, the burgundy may overtake the space. Blunt the effect with a creamy white or misty gray wall color. The two opposing colors actually complement each other, creating visual balance. Bridge the two colors by painting the trim burgundy and adding the same creamy white or misty gray shades to an area rug or throw pillows.

    Traditional Style

    • Characteristics of traditional furniture include curvy lines, high backs and padded arms, along with heavy legs and deep upholstery. The burgundy color is made all the more complex by the complexity of traditional designs. Relieve this potentially convoluted visual, in which the burgundy competes with the style, by applying a neutral shade to the walls. Select a beige tine for the walls to tone down the burgundy and counteract the curves and heaviness of the furniture. Select sage for your wall color if you want a fresher look and a bit more contrast in the color scheme.

    Modern Style

    • Modern furniture has clean lines, low backs and appears lighter in weight than traditional furniture. To emphasize the burgundy, on this style, choose a clean white color with a blue undertone for the walls. Paint the trim a deep blue to act as a counter balance to the high contrast. If you want to tone down the modern style, choose a pinkish color for the walls. Honeysuckle brings out the red in the burgundy, while a lilac color plays to the purple tone. The burgundy then is more visually important than the style of the furniture.
