How to Make a Wall Look Like the Inside of a Castle

Painting a wall to make it look like the inside of a castle adds a fun touch to a child's bedroom or any room with a medieval decor. You can paint just one wall as an accent, or paint the whole room like a castle for a fanciful feel. Once your wall or walls look like a castle, you are ready to accessorize with dragons, armor and medieval furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare for painting your wall by puttying any holes, lining the baseboards, edges, and light switches with painter's tape, and covering the floor and furniture with drop cloths.

    • 2

Paint the wall using a roller for large areas and brush for edges and trim using gray or brown latex paint. Let dry overnight. Repeat if you desire a second coat.

    • 3

Draw stones on the wall with chalk. They should be roughly 10 by 14 inches in size, but the shape of the stones should vary to look natural. Leave a 1/2-inch line between the stones for the appearance of mortar. Erase the line with a paper towel and redraw if you are unhappy with the appearance or size of a stone.

    • 4

Pour light gray and dark gray paint into cups. Start with light gray paint and use a paintbrush to partially cover each stone in the middle (leave the edges of the stone untouched). Then, use another brush and the dark gray paint to cover the edge of the stone, but add a few dabs of dark gray in the middle of the stone for texture.

    • 5

Bunch up a plastic shopping bag. Hold it in your hand and tap it over the wet paint to create texture on the stones.

    • 6

Touch up the mortar using a small paintbrush and the base coat paint. Let the paint dry overnight.

    • 7

Use a damp sponge to wash the chalk off the wall.
