How to Faux Paint a Wood Door

The appearance of a door can give an impression of the room behind it before it is even opened. For a non-traditional appearance or to blend the door into a room, a faux finish may be the answer. There are multiple types of faux finishes; select one that fits the surrounding decor. A marble faux finish and a solid color with crackle glaze are two options.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from the hinges, using a screwdriver. Place the door on a clean dry area.

    • 2

Apply a base coat of paint. Select the color based on the decor of the room. Use a large brush or small roller to completely cover the door with the paint.

    • 3

Apply the first layer of the faux process. For a marble faux finish, use a rag to roll on a secondary color of paint, leaving gaps and spaces on the door. For a crackle finish, apply a second full coat of a secondary color.

Apply the final layer to the door. For a marble faux finish, use a rag to roll on a third color sparsely. For a crackle finish, apply the crackle glaze and allow it to dry. If choosing a crackle finish, the glaze must be applied prior to the second coat drying.
