Choose from colors of paint that are cool colors, such as gray blues and gray greens, if the couch is a very neutral or cool gray. If the couch is a warm gray, you will need to avoid cool colors and pick from warm tones like beige, tan and copper.
Pick paint colors that are colorful and lively, whenever possible. Colors like eggplant and sage go well with gray. Or, if you feel compelled to pick a neutral paint color like a beige or tan, try livening up the room with an accent wall. An accent wall is a single wall that is painted a different color from the other walls in the room. The accent wall may be a different neutral from the other three walls or a different color altogether.
Avoid picking dull paint colors like cream, white or plain gray; they may match the couch, but that doesn't mean they'll look good. White and cream will likely wash out the room, while plain gray will make your room look bleak and sparse.
Paint samples of your favorite paint possibilities on the wall over the couch and allow the paint samples to dry. Don't pick a color for the room unless you've seen the color in all qualities of light, including evening light and daylight.
