How to Create an Antiqued Look on Walls

Call it old-fashioned, but antique-finish walls add a subtle touch of classic elegance to any room. Achieving a faux-antique wall is simple, even with few inexpensive materials. The aged, distressed walls give a room an authentic antiquity that may be dressed up with rich accents and sophisticated decor.

Instructions

    • 1

Mask the trim along the bottom of the wall , and along the top where the wall meets the ceiling, with painter's tape.

    • 2

Apply a base coat of white paint to the wall and allow to dry. Repeat with a second coat of white paint.

    • 3

Pour all paint, glaze, and water into a large metal container. Stir with a paint stick until well-blended.

    • 4

Add the glaze to the walls with a paint roller. Work in vertical sections creating horizontal strokes with your roller. If more paint is applied to other areas, that will add to the antique feel of the room.

    • 5

Soak a sponge in clean water. After wringing it out, place it into the glaze mixture. Wring out the excess glaze from the sponge.

    • 6

Press the sponge against the wall in random areas to achieve the desired look. Allow the paint to dry. Remove painter's tape.
