Painting the Bay Window an Accent Color

Bay windows are often the focal point of a room, and make beautiful accent walls. When deciding on a paint color for an accent wall, it's important to consider the prominent colors in your decor. For a subtle but beautiful accent wall, use a darker shade of the paint on your other walls. This will draw the attention to your bay window but won't be overbearing.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your paint. Decide whether you want to use a darker shade of your existing color or a new color completely. If you decide to choose a new color, pick one that is represented in the room's decor.

    • 2

Sand any of the areas of the wall that are not smooth.

    • 3

Wipe down the wall with a dust rag to remove any dust. Mix 1 cup ammonia with a gallon of water. Soak a sponge in the mixture and wipe the walls clean with it.

    • 4

Tape off the trim and any other areas you want to protect.

    • 5

Open a can of primer. Stir the primer with a paint stick. Fill a paint tray with primer.

    • 6

Roll a paint roller into the primer. Paint the entire wall with the primer. Use a small paintbrush for small areas, such as between the windows.

    • 7

Allow the primer to dry for four hours or until it feels dry to the touch.

    • 8

Open the paint and stir it with a paint stick.

    • 9

Pour a half-gallon of colored paint into a clean paint tray and roll a clean roller in the paint.

    • 10

Apply the paint to the wall in 2- or 3-foot square areas at a time. Roll the paint on in a zigzag pattern, like you are painting an M or W. Roll paint into the blank areas with vertical or horizontal strokes. Use a small brush for small areas that can't be reached with the roller.

    • 11

Allow the paint to dry for four to eight hours or until it is no longer wet to the touch.

    • 12

Apply a second coat of paint.
