Using chalkboard paint allows you to place a chalkboard in virtually any room and use it for any purpose. Painting a wall in a child's room with chalkboard paint allows for a creative outlet, whereas painting a framed mirror can provide an area for family organization in the kitchen. Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the surface by removing any nails and filling in holes with plaster compound and a putty knife. Allow the plaster compound to dry and sand any rough edges with 60-grit sandpaper.

    • 2

Tape off any surrounding areas with painter's tape. If you are applying the chalkboard paint to walls, tape the trim, window frames and ceiling to avoid getting paint on them.

    • 3

Apply two coats of chalkboard paint in thin even layers using a sponge roller and tray. Allow the coats of paint to dry before adding another.

    • 4

Sand the first layer of chalk board paint using 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe any dust with a damp cloth.

    • 5

Apply two more coats of chalkboard paint using a sponge roller. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
