Whitewash is more of a thin glaze than a paint. You used to have to make it using lime and salt. These days, however, latex paint works just as well. Whitewash does not have to actually be white -- it can be any color you choose. Before you apply your whitewash, clean the surface of the item you will be painting. Then, dip a paint brush into the whitewash and paint it onto the object in an up and down motion. Wait approximately 24 hours between coats.

Pour approximately one cup of latex paint into a clean five-gallon bucket.

Pour eight to nine cups of water into the bucket with the paint. Stir the mixture with a wooden mixing stick. Use less water to achieve a darker whitewash and more water to achieve a lighter whitewash.

Pour two 32-ounce bottles of glazing medium into the five-gallon bucket. Stir in with the mixing stick.
