How to Fix Air Bubbles in a New Paint Job

Painting is a labor-intensive undertaking filled with hours of preparation, work and sweat. Nothing is more disheartening than stepping back to admire your freshly painted walls and noticing unsightly air bubbles. The air bubbles, or blistering, occur when the paint and walls underneath do not bond correctly. This lack of adhesion is caused by many things, from dirt and debris to the type of paint used. It is possible to quickly and inexpensively correct the blistering on your freshly painted walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the paint to dry completely. Do not attempt to repair the blistering when the paint is wet.

    • 2

Remove the individual air bubbles with a razor blade. Run the sharp edge of the blade under the paint to lift the bubbles. Sand the wall to remove any paint chips and create an even surface to apply the primer and paint with fine-grit sandpaper.

    • 3

Wipe down the wall with a damp microfiber cloth to remove any dust, debris or grime.

    • 4

Cover the exposed wall with a layer of primer. Use a small paint roller or brush to create a thin, even coat of primer.

    • 5

Allow the primer to dry completely before applying a thin layer of paint with a small paintbrush or roller. Apply the paint 1 to 2 inches beyond the primed wall to create a more seamless finished appearance.

    • 6

Allow the first layer of paint to dry before applying a second, thin layer.
